A Brief History of Collier County

Collier County was created in 1923 and named for Barron Collier, a wealthy advertising entrepreneur who bought vast tracts of land in Southwest Florida and financed the completion of the Tamiami Trail across the Everglades. The trail opened in 1928, connecting Tampa and Miami and opening the region to development. Everglades City served as the first county seat, a company town Collier built to support the road’s construction. After a hurricane in 1960, the county seat moved to the Naples area.

Naples itself began as a small winter resort in the late nineteenth century, prized for its beaches and fishing. Through the second half of the twentieth century, it grew into one of the most affluent communities in the United States, while Golden Gate, Marco Island, and later North Naples and Ave Maria were developed around it. Throughout, the county preserved enormous natural areas — Big Cypress, Fakahatchee, Picayune Strand, Corkscrew, and the Ten Thousand Islands — that still make up much of its land. Today, Collier County combines world-class coastal living with some of the wildest landscapes in the eastern United States.
