A Brief History of Golden Gate

In the early 1960s, a Florida land company began selling lots in a vast new development east of Naples, marketing them nationwide with promises of a future city in the sun. Golden Gate City was laid out near what would later become I-75, and an enormous grid of roads was cut through the pine flatwoods and cypress to create Golden Gate Estates. For years, much of the Estates remained sparsely populated, with many lots owned by people who lived far away. Drainage canals dug for the project changed the area’s natural water flow, and part of the land to the south was later restored as Picayune Strand State Forest.

As Naples grew, families discovered Golden Gate’s relative affordability and space. Golden Gate City filled in, and the Estates gradually became home to tens of thousands of residents who appreciate a rural lifestyle within reach of the coast.
